Nomans Land: Last Crusade
The good folks at Massacre Records have helpfully provided some facts for the uninitiated about Nomans Land and their new release Last Crusade. To whit;
- The fifth album by the Russian Viking metal quartet NOMANS LAND!
- Death metal meets viking/melodic/pagan metal.
- Recorded and mixed by Aki Väkevä at Madmix in Kouvola, Finland.
- Mastered by Jaakko Viitalähde at Virtalähde Mastering in Kuhmoinen, Finland.
I have to say that the fact that the band hail from Russia would have been somewhat lost on me if I hadn't read it and therein lies the rub of the situation with this album. It's good but not great, there are some decent songs here especially "Sons of the Nord" which bowls along nicely and is like a slightly less heavy Amon Amarth. On this song and throughout the band are tight and very much reminiscent of the mighty Ensiferum which is always a good thing. That said, Last Crusade is not the most original Viking Metal album out there and one can see a future where the band find themselves as the perennial opening act on a three band bill.
