Diecast: Tearing Down Your Blue Skies

Boston's metalcore mongrels Diecast have returned after a three year absence with a new vocalist and a kick-ass album called Tearing Down Your Blue Skies, a mature and enjoyable slice of melodic thrash metal that also mixes in plenty of brutal & technical hardcore elements that the band are known for.

New singer Paul Stoddard has a great voice, as he adds tons of melodic clean vocals to his arsenal or throaty growls and screams on each track here. Songs like "Seize the Day" and "Sacrifice" are brutally powerful, yet still retain the slightest bit of commercial viability due to Stoddard's clean delivery. At times, it's as if he has two personalities, his violent side, and his melodic sides, and it works especially well within the confines of the bands aggressive songwriting. Check out his endearing pipes on the catchy "Medieval", a sure fire metal anthem that is as melodic as it is lethal. The dual guitars of Kirk Kolatis and Jonathan Kita provide plenty of muscular firepower, whether they are buldozing you with bludgeoning Slayer-type riffs, or intricate Iron Maiden inspired dual harmony work as on the excellent "Rebirth." The two create all sorts of evil riffery on the death-metal attack of "Rise and Oppose", a song also notworthy for the blazing rhythm work of drummer Jason Costa and bassist Jeremy Wooden.

If there's one complaint, it's that the CD is too damn short. At barely over 35 minutes, Tearing Down Your Blue Skies is over before you get a chance to break a sweat in your own self-imposed mosh pit. However, that will not stop you from hitting the replay button, over, and over again. Diecast is another Century Media band that seems on the verge of making a dent in the mainstream metal market.
