Vamps: Bloodsuckers

Vamps are essentially a duo from Japan. The main protagonists are Hyde who gives us both vocals as well as rhythm guitar alongside K.A.Z's lead guitar and backing vocals. Bloodsuckers is their fourth album and has been out for quite a while in their homeland. Given the success of Babymetal (who are an entirely different beast) it isn't entirely surprising to see it get wider distribution in the western world. The album is produced by Vamps and Josh Wilbur (whose previous credits include, surprisingly, Gojira and Lamb of God) and features artwork by the Japanese artist Rockin' Jelly Bean which, to be frank, doesn't work for me in the slightest but fortunately it doesn't make a sound.

The album begins promisingly with the short, mostly piano-led instrumental which has a similarity with pop punkers Army of Freshmen which is generally a good thing. "From Zero" onwards though I find everything a little too poppy and some of the clipped U2/Coldplay guitars really don't work for me. I can absolutely see how Vamps have the capacity to be massive. Their sound is almost precisely built for large venues yet surely one would expect a song titled "Evil" to be at least somewhat edgy rather than a prime example of middle of the road modern rock? Bloodsuckers is adequate and sadly, that's about as good as it gets.
