Nercambulant: Internal Infectious Necro-Ambulatory Pandemic

Relentless and brutal, Necrambulant slam into gear on their debut outing Internal Infectious Necro-Ambulatory Pandemic, showing a healthy respect for Devourment or Deeds Of Flesh. Thick sludges of palm muted riffs rain down continuously, only breaking long enough to reveal blinding bursts of technicality through break-neck drum assaults, or finger breaking fret pyrotechnics. Vocally Brandon Shobe employs a low growl, which only changes pitch subtly, eschewing the possibility of deciphering lyrics. Instead his approach is more instrumental and, strangely, integral to the sound this band make. Many will find the approach too extreme, too one dimensional, however Shobe does a magnificent job of adding to the threat and gloom of what is, for the most part, a surprisingly sedate release in terms of pace; Nercambulant satisfied to bludgeon repeatedly, rather than dart in for a quick kill.

"Strategic Dismemberment Of Anomalous Reanimated Flesh" (not the longest track title on this album...) is a prime example of what this band do so well, a grinding smack interrupted with sudden bursts of speed, kick drum explosions and the occasional guitar foray. Production wise things are steady, the balance of allowing the vocals to sit in the music without getting lost handled with care and yet the drum sounds can sometimes become overbearing and in places, "plastic" sounding. Nothing of the organic left as beats machine gun overhead, as they do on the title track. However the singular attack of this album does begin to wear you down and as you reach its conclusion there's a distinct feeling of deja vu due to the unstintingly similar feel from track to track. More of a solid album which can, in places, hit with a serious precision and force, Nercambulant have set a strong standard from which to build. Death Metal fans with a penchant for Kraanium, Devourment or Aborted Fetus will find much to engage here, although not up to those heady heights yet.
