Gaped: The Murderous Inception

It says much for Australia's Gaped that their cover of the Cannibal Corpse standard "Stripped, Raped And Strangled" fits like a glove with the five original tracks on this short EP. In fact so much so, if you didn't know it was a CC track, you'd presume it was one of their own. The band consists of Ryan Huthnance and, well no one else really, although to be fair Shane Watts wrote all the lyrics and features in the "band" shots. However Ryan makes a mighty impact through choppy riffs and an aggressive attack. Calling The Murderous Inception simple Death Metal would do it a disservice, for there's so much happening here that Gaped are as likely to slice you to pieces with their melody as they are the simple brutality, or growled, but perfectly annunciated vocals. Most impressively though, they simply brutalise with a precision a new, one man act seldom does; each and every aspect of Gaped working at maximum velocity.

Lyrically Gaped have a fascination for murder and mutilation, the stories recounting dismemberment and the worship of the process. Over the five tracks, where "Let The Cutting Begin" opens with a female voice imploring someone to slowly and dispassionately cut her to pieces (hardly likely to be picked up as a feminine anthem any time soon), the subject matter and cohesive theme works well. However if and when Gaped move to a full length release, they'll need to broaden their pallet somewhat to hold the interest.

Australia is hardly known for its extreme metal scene, explaining neatly why The Murderous Inception sounds, in places, remarkably Scandinavian. Gaped have set their standard high right from the off. If they can maintain it, then the death scene could have a new major player.
