Verheyen, Carl: Alone – Solo Guitar Improvisations Volume 2

First and foremost Carl Verheyen is an excellent guitarist. He is also a teacher and a writer and is a well sought out session musician. He has also been a member of Supertramp since the mid '80s of which I had no idea. Hey, you learn something new every day, right?

Alone is the follow up to his 2001 release Solo Guitar Improvisations Volume 1. He is a wonderful player of which he so ably displays on these fourteen tracks, twelve covers and two original compositions.

His playing can be as delicate as a feather especially on the Gabriel classic "Mercy Street" and Jimmy Van Heusen's "Darn That Dream". The Metheny penned "Last Train Home" is a soothing piece featuring lovely picking and ending with a tremendous solo.

For a more blues and jazz flavour try the stripped down sounds of "Good Morning Judge" and the jaunty "The Gentle Rain" respectively. The incredibly poignant "Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero", originally written by Mark Knopfler, is another highlight.

Probably my favourite part of the album is the Beatles trifecta halfway through. "All You Need Is Love", 'Norwegian Wood" and "In My Life" exhibit some truly breathtaking moments of solo acoustic guitar.

Carl notes that these are "mostly covers of songs I like" and "I only cover a song by another composer if I feel I have something new to say about it." This album is not about making these songs better but shedding a new light on some old classics and reshaping them in his own imaginative way. Highly recommended, especially for fans of instrumental acoustic guitar.
