Uhrijuhla: Jokainen on Vapaa Lintu

Hey trivia fans! Did you know that Uhrijuhla the Finnish translation of the cult horror classic film The Wicker Man? As a bit of an obsessive fan of Robin Hardy's deeply disturbing piece of celluloid and as someone who has appreciated Uhrijuhla in the past I'm pleased to spend some time with their second album, Jokainen on Vapaa Lintu (Everyone is a free bird.)The band has undergone somewhat of a metamorphosis since their debut album; vocalist Jani Muurinen (Xysma, Mannhai), guitarist Markus Myllykangas (Callisto) and drummer Kari Salminen (500 kg lihaa) have left and been replaced by, singer, lyricist and novelist Kauko Röyhkä (Kauko Röyhkä & Narttu), guitarist Kimi Kärki (Reverend Bizarre, Orne, Lord Vicar, E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr), and the drummer Kikke Lindberg (Wojciech). Olli Kauniskangas and Kimmo Laine (both 500 kg lihaa) play guitar, bass and keyboards. Olga Välimaa seems to still be in the band though. Got it? Let's continue.

As with the self-titled debut album everything about Uhrijuhla is calm and serene and decidedly non-demonstrative. Some of it ("Hiljaisuuden luostari") is just plain lovely and ethereal and a key adjective for much of the album would be hypnotic. "Juokse poika juokse" is propelled by an enigmatic female vocal and is arguably so laid back that it is in danger of falling over. If you're hankering for cinematic, atmospheric yet concise tunes look no further. Another winner from Svart Records'incredibly diverse roster.
