Volucrine: The Clockwork Tyrant

Formerly known simply as V, under which name they released the album The Year Of Relinquishment, the Finnish six piece Volucrine return with a new name and a new EP, The Clockwork Tyrant. The band's new name may help this act step into the limelight, but I'm not 100% convinced that their Alt-Metal with hints of HIM will – yet. I say yet because while the scream the vocal/sing the vocal, tear out the riff/pull back to clean guitar attack, may be everywhere at the moment, the three guitar approach employed here does offer different potential offshoots and ideas. While vocalist Jupe Velin being constantly backed up by the diverse voices of guitarists Jarmo Hienonen and Joona Lapilainen, serves up a host of alternate possibilities.

"One Must Stay" finds Volucrine in mid paced mode, a little soul searching going on in a way that suggests genuine crossover potential, while "Heartquake" goes down the harder heavier path. Add in the title track and the pattern is pretty much set of dart in with a savage blow and then back off to see what damage has been done. Interestingly the closing track "Acid Raindance" also finds itself reworked into a bonus acoustic version (the EP was initially released by the band as a free download and this acoustic bonus is only to be found on this physical version) and by quite a distance it's the best thing on the whole EP. Suddenly the intricacies and detail of what Volucrine want to portray are revealed in stark and captivating fashion. They may not want to hear it, but had the whole EP been presented in this way, there's a strong possibility I'd be raving about it right now. As is it, The Clockwork Tyrant is a solid, if unremarkable release that finds a band in good form, but struggling to stand out from the crowd.
