Voices: London

Don't be fooled by the opening track "Suicide Note", which is a haunting slice of Anathema/Katatonia styled melancholy rock, hardly indicative of the remainder of London, the latest from the Akercocke spin-off group Voices. Featuring David Gray (drums), Sam Loynes ( bass), and Peter Benjamin (guitar/vocals), Voices straddle the line between raging death metal, melancholy doom, and a touch of black metal for a style that is at times unique, and for the most part pummeling and extremely unsettling. "Music for the Recently Bereaved" contains all of these elements in one haunting, terrifying setting, nearly 8-minutes of delicious, torturous rapture. "Vicarious Lover" throws not only harsh black metal screams at the listener, but also crooning melodic vocals, all housed within a cage of brutal riffs, lilting chords, and jackhammer blast beats. "The Antidote" has elements of post rock, while the technical passages and overall diversity of songs like "Hourglass", "Megan", "Imaginary Sketches of a Poisoned Man", and "The Ultimate Narcissist" are hard to ignore. Those wanting out and out fury need look no further than "The FuckTrance" and "The House of Black Light", while the feeling of isolation & despair of "Cold Harbour Lane" will send chills up and down your spine.

Some might find that London is a bit too 'all over the place', and that indeed might be true, as Voices seem to be trying to be a band that have a little something for everyone. They certainly have a unique sound, but like Akercocke, there are moments here that are sure to scare off the non-extreme crowd. That being said, if you want to hear something diverse, progressive, moody, and truly heavy, London will be well worth investigating.
