Osborne, Mike: Dawn

Mike Osborne's story is one of the tragedies of British jazz. Within a comparatively short period of breaking into the scene mental illness had taken over and forced him away from his musical compatriots in vibrant London and brought him back to his native Hereford (near the Welsh border), where he lived under care until his death in 2007, his saxophone silent for decades. Fortunately these archived 1966 and 1970 recordings, first released by Cuneiform Records, not only fill in important gaps in Osborne's own discography but in the history of British jazz and British music as a whole.

Cuneiform have decided to present Osborne in reverse chronological order with the first six tracks are by his trio, his main vehicle as a leader and featuring his most long-standing partners in Harry Miller and Louis Moholo which were recorded in late 1970 whilst the remainder of the songs were laid down in 1966. Dawn isn't an easy listen by any stretch of the imagination with its frequent trips down the path of dissonance and its free form meanderings (one could feasibly say directionless if one was being uncharitable) but at times as on the title track and "Jack Rabbit" things coalesce into something quite magical and almost spiritual.
