Garotting Deep / Fōr: Void Asceticism (Split)

Here's a new split by a band from Canada (Garotting Deep) and a band from Sweden (Fōr). Both bands are fixed securely within the underground music scene, neither one trying to make the listener comfortable or even passive. Though both bands are different, they share a fascination with bleakness, decay, and death and create music largely based on death / black / sludge metal idioms. For lack of a better term, I found the music lonely, isolated, as if it were not only dark, but melancholy.

The split is even: the first three tracks are by Garotting Deep and the second three tracks are by Fōr. Listeners who want their music to be as dark as can be—and just as challenging—may enjoy this release. I thought it made for an interesting listen, but I didn't always appreciate the consistent attempts to push the sound into the realm of noise. Don't get me wrong, I like noise music and am fascinated by all the sonic possibilities out there (well, generally), but I often felt unengaged with this release. I thought Garotting Deep sounded a bit tighter as a band than Fōr, but my favorite track was the latter's "Behexed by Mortuary Chants," a long song with some sweet riffing in the last minute or so. I did not enjoy "Spraekjo." This made for an intriguing listen, but it's not a release I would put on a regular rotation. Fans of underground metal with an even darker edge than usual may enjoy this one.
