Nervecell: Psychogenocide

Sometimes I can't keep track of the various re-issues and re-releases out there. This album, for example, came out in 2011. I'm honestly not sure whether it came out in America at that time, but it did make the rounds in Europe and other parts of the world. I'm sure plenty of people, both in the USA and elsewhere already know this album and like it. I'm going to write this review for those who are thinking about checking this one out for the first time.

Nervecell is a death / thrash metal band from Dubai, one of the first bands of its kind from there. Even though the band started in 2000, they've only been releasing albums since 2009. This album is their second release. The music is a blend of middle-eastern influences and well constructed death / thrash metal music. As I listen to this album, I especially hear the influence of Nile. The connection is quite deliberate—Karl Sanders even makes a guest appearance on "Shunq," lending his own killer vocals to an already crushing track. One of the guitar parts even sounds a bit like Sanders' playing, but I'm not sure whether he actually plays on that track.

Look—this is a killer release. It's heavy and melodic and interesting and blistering. It deserves all the attention it has received and more. Check out "Amok Doctrine," "Shunq," and "The Taste of Betrayal." The opening track, "Anemic Assurgency" is also pretty great.

Track Listing:
1. Anemic Assurgency
2. Upon an Epidemic Scheme
3. All Eyes on Them
4. Amok Doctrine
5. Psychogenocide
6. Imprint
7. Shunq (To the Despaired. . . King of Darkness)
8. The Taste of Betrayal
9. Driven by Nescience
10. Nation's Plague
