Lori S.(Guitar & Vocals), Joey Osbourne (drums), and Mark Lamb (bass) are Acid King, a sludge/psychedelic doom power trio from San Francisco who have been in 'studio silence' for the better part of a decade but are now rising from the black depths with their fourth release Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere for Svart Records. Bookended by the now cliched "Intro" and "Outro" (seriously, is it so hard for bands to names these little instrumental bits?) Acid King have filled the middle of this sandwich with some seriously heavy sludge, highlighted by the haunting vocals and mammoth riffing of Lori. "Infinite Skies" is slow, ponderous, and menacing, a perfect slice of psychedelic doom, the massive rhythms from Osbourne & Lamb just pounding away under the crushing riffs, and the near 9-minute "Center of Everywhere" is like a nightmarish collision between Saint Vitus and Hawkwind. Acid soaked fuzz and yearning lead guitar lines permeate the hazy "Silent Pictures", and the rumbling, boiling "Coming Down from Outer Space" provides the albums most upbeat moments, a headbanging mix of Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, and Monster Magnet. Perhaps the most intriguing song however is "Red River", a pulsating, dreamy, swirling mass of riffs, drums, and Lori's ethereal vocals...the perfect soundtrack to any bong fest.
Those into psychedelic but very heavy & doomy sounds will no doubt flock to Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere. Without a doubt, a welcome return from this trio.
