Here we have another live DVD/CD set from legendary heavy rock pioneers Uriah Heep, who have been electrifying audiences worldwide for over 45 years. Recorded last year in London at Koko, the band debuted two songs from their then new album Outsider, as well as favorites from Wake the Sleeper, Into the Wild,and of course classics from their '70s repertoire. This live set features the steady line-up of Mick Box (guitar), Bernie Shaw (vocals), Phil Lanzon (keyboards), Russell Gilbrook (drums), and Dave Rimmer (bass), the latter replacing the late Trevor Bolder a few years back.
Though we weren't actually given the DVD to review here, we did have access to the full audio of the show, and there are many highlights. Those who have been following the band closely over the last decade are obviously aware that the Heep have released a string of solid albums in recent times, so look for gems such as "Overload", "I'm Ready", "Can't Take That Away", "Nail on the Head", "One Minute", "Against the Odds", and "Into the Wild", all off their last few albums. If you haven't checked out these albums...well you should, but fear not loyal Heepsters, as the band dives deep into their back catalog for stellar renditions of "Gypsy", "Traveller in Time", "Look at Yourself", "Sunrise", "Stealin' ", "July Morning", "Free 'n' Easy", "Lady in Black", and of course, "Easy Livin' ". The band are in fine form throughout, with Mick's chunky riffs and wah-wah solos ever present alongside the raging Hammond organ from Lanzon, and Shaw's vocals are solid as always.
Along with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple, Uriah Heep have long been thought as one of the originators of heavy rock music. Here they are 45 years later and still going strong, with a stunning live album to help bring in 2015.
