Various Artists: Fenriz Presents The Best of Old School Black Metal

Good God y'all! The only real disappointment here is that this 16-track compilation from Darkthrone drummer Fenriz doesn't come in cassette form with handwritten notes and a faded TDK or Maxell sticker (and one or two sonic dropouts along the way). Fenriz hits all the high spots, whether Sodom's "Burst Command Til War," Tormentor's "Elisabeth Bathory," Destruction's "Curse The Gods," or Mayhem's "Freezing The Moon." It's all there, baby, right beside Venom's "Warhead," Bathory's "Dies Irae" and Mercyful Fate's "Evil." (There's evidence that King Diamond and Co. had more in common with Thin Lizzy at times than with the likes of Mayhem and Emperor and that it was a bigger influence on Metallica than some will ever know.)

More importantly, our friend Fenriz includes little-heard gems such as Sarcofago's "Satanic Lust," Aura Noir's "Blood Unity" and Bulldozer's "Whisky Time." (He's also got the intestinal fortitude to put a Hellhammer track on there, a brave move if ever you've seen one.) So much of what's here harkens back to a time when metal––black, brown or green––had an innovative naiveté to it, when it didn't take itself too seriously and when it was more about music than corpse paint, blood and having the darkest, most evil image. Ironically enough it was a time brimming with a kind of hope, an unspoken belief that these bands were the bands and making the music that would change our lives. They were. And they did.

It's not hip to talk about your feelings when you speak of black metal (lest that feeling is hate) but this feels like a really nice letter from a close friend, the perfect thing to chill your bones on a long winter's night. This moves straight to the top of my indispensable list.
