Here's a band that has great potential to be breakout stars for Metal Blade Records, the Salt Lake City, Utah outfit calling themselves Visigoth. Their debut The Revenant Kings features some of the most impressive pure/classic metal that I've heard in quite some time. Remember when you first heard the mighty Savatage, or perhaps that moment when you first discovered underground sensations Manilla Road? That's kind of the 'thrill' you'll get the first time you put on The Revenant Kings, a powerful, majestic, and quite heavy album that reeks of class & professionalism. Hell, they even do a killer cover version of Manilla Road's "Necropolis" off their classic Crystal Logic album. How cool is that?!
Visigoth are Jake Rogers (vocals), Jamison Palmer (guitar), Leeland Campana (guitar), Matt Brotherton (bass), and Mikey Tee (drums), and though they've only been together since 2010, the band sounds like they've been joined at the hip for twice as long. The music here is tight, melodic, epic, heavy, and grandiose, everything we fans love about classic heavy metal. References? Iron Maiden, Savatage, Dio, Manilla Road, and Grand Magus instantly come to mind, but the band really have developed their own sound, thanks in part to the magnificent vocals of Rogers. This guy brings it on each and every song here, his soaring vocals driving epic metal tracks like "Vengeance", "Mammoth Rider" and "Blood Sacrifice", each one also chock full of galloping rhythms, crushing riffs, and tasty twin guitar harmonies. The lead guitars are explosive, which you can hear to great effect on the raging "Creature of Desire" as well as the lengthy power/prog/doom closer "From the Arcane Mists of Prophecy", easily one of the highlights on this album full of splendid songs.
2015 has just began and already we have what is sure to be one of the years strongest heavy metal releases. As debuts go, this one is a mindblower, and Visigoth are without a doubt a band that's going to make a quick and long lasting impression on the metal scene. Highly recommended!
