Crisis Cult is the third release (all on Massacre Records) from German act Voices of Destiny, a band who perform a stellar mix of female fronted power metal with a touch of extreme metal for good measure. Comprised of Ada Flechtner (Vocals), Chris Gutjahr (Guitars), Lukas Palme (Keyboards & Vocals), Jens Hartwig (Bass), and Klaus Ackermann (Drums), the current line-up of the band sees Flechtner's initiation into the group, replacing Maike Holzmann earlier this year. Fans of Epica, After Forever, Sirenia, Xandria, Leaves Eyes, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, and Within Temptation will find much to like here on Crisis Cult, as the bands penchant for dueling female vocals & male growls, symphonic keyboards, crushing guitar riffs, and anthemic choruses will certainly strike a chord with listeners who can't get enough of this sort of thing.
To be honest, it will be hard for any metal fan to ignore a tune like "To the Slaughter", a really heavy hitting piece chock full of menacing riffs, killer hooks, and those dueling vocals from Flechtner & Palme. Sure, it's a formula that's been done before, and while the band perhaps aren't quite up to Epica levels here, it's still impressive. Ada for her part really soars on the entire album, really getting our attention on the symphonic "21 Heroes", the lush "At the Edge", and the rampaging, progressive metal leanings of "Stormcrow". Musically speaking, the band is firing on all cylinders throughout, with plenty of magical keyboard & guitar passages sprinkled on each tune, allowing Gutjahr & Palme to really show off their talents, but Hartwig & Ackermann also need to be commended for some really dynamic rhythms. Other highlights include the heavy "Wolfpack", the old school metal of "Under Control" (featuring a killer vocal from Ada), and the melodic, symphonic, epic sounding "The Great Hunt".
So there you have it, a very enjoyable, if not somewhat familiar sounding release from Voices of Destiny. Female fronted symphonic power metal with dueling male death growls done quite well, and if you can't get enough of this style of metal, I can only highly recommend Crisis Cult.
