Hot Sardines, The: The Hot Sardines

The Hot Sardines are a New York City jazz band that have recently made quite the name for themselves selling out the famed Joe's Pub for fifteen straight shows. This is foot tapping jazz music from a bygone era. I can imagine sitting at a bar during the dirty '30s and listening to this type of old school jazz.

In the band are Evan Palazzo (piano), Miz Elizabeth (vocals), Alex Raderman (drums, percussion), Sam Raderman (guitar, banjo), Jason Prover (trumpet), Joe McDonough (trombone), Nick Myers (tenor saxophone, clarinet, flute) and Evan Crane (bass, sousaphone). They even include a tap dancer dubbed "Fast Eddy" Francisco.

The first distinguishing feature I noticed immediately was the voice of Miz Elizabeth. She has an old school New Orleans charm that is a perfect match for this ensemble. She sings in English and French. Of course one person does not make a band and the rest of the players are equally as talented. The rhythm section is both subtle and vibrant and Palazzo's piano is an integral part to the band's nostalgic sound. His presence is heard in every piece.

Whether it's the romantic ballad "Wake Up In Paris" with its gentle piano and sultry lead vocals or the fun "Goin' Crazy With The Blues" where jaunty piano melodies, banjo inflected rhythms and a rich brass section combine for an intoxicating listen, The Hot Sardines have more than enough gusto to make this a must have for any and all fans of jazz. Highly recommended.
