Kreyskull: Tower Witch

The members of Kreyskull describe the band as "heavy rock n' doom." That label fits well enough, though the emphasis should fall more heavily on the "rock" than on the "doom." Yes, the sound is deep, strong, and riff-oriented, but this band is not necessarily working a Black Sabbath angle as much as a general 70s-influenced heavy rock sound. The 70s, of course, have made a near-permanent impact, one that continues to show up regularly. Bands like Scorpion Child and Orange Goblin (and many, many others) give listeners plenty of reason to rediscover the strength of the past as it mingles with the present.

The band is particularly good at setting up a heavy groove, the kind that even boogies a little bit here and there. As I listen to this album, I can easily picture these guys jamming on one of their songs—take "Abomination Jungle," for example—and bidding the crowd to clap, dance, and sing along. There's a crowd-pleasing quality to the music here, one that works pretty well. Better still, the music has a familiar shiver and shake, the kind easily recognized by rock fans.
