Unearth: Watchers of Rule

I almost cringed when I caught word that yet another Unearth album was going to be coming across our review desk. Don't get me wrong, this long running metalcore outfit was one of the bands that kind of got that whole movement going, and to be honest, they are really good at what they do. The problem is that the whole metalcore scene has been stale for years, and even the great Unearth have kind of stalled recently. Well, I'm happy to report that Watchers of Rule, their new release for eOne Music, is a pretty kick ass set of brutal extreme metal, certainly not an album that's going to change the face of the genre or anything, but one that's going to please a lot of fans. Their never relenting guitar onslaught is ever present, with tracks like "Lifetime in Ruins", "From the Tombs of Five Below", and the more melodic "Never Cease" containing no shortage of six string histrionics from Ken Susi & Buz McGrath, two players who can solo with chops & precision as well as lay down brutal riffs and crushing breakdowns. "Trail to Fire" is a perfect example of the latter, just a pummeling track with Trevor Phipps snarling, growling, and screaming up a storm. Wonderful twin guitar lines weave and swirl around intricate rhythms and powerhouse riffs on the angry "Burial Lines", and the maniacal "Birth of a Legion" is just a furious slice of metalcore that works on every level.

So, as you can tell, nothing really new here on Watchers of Rule, but man can Unearth hit all the right buttons when they really want to. Production is great, tunes are heavy & brutal as hell, and the guitar work is stellar. Can't really ask for more.
