Drone Maintenance is the latest Small Stone Recordings release from the progressive drone project known as Blackwolfgoat, which is basically the solo works of guitarist Darryl Shepard from Black Pyramid, The Scimitar, and Roadsaw. Influenced by the '70s prog, Krautrock, and jazz-fusion scenes, Drone Maintenance is a cool throwback to mysterious & haunting sounds that were prevalent throughout that decade, Shepard's guitar conjuring up chilling images through weaving soundcapes and jagged emotion on tracks such as "Sunfall", "Axxtrokk", "Notausgang", and the searing fuzz tones of "Night Heat". It's all quite minimalistic, and some might say simplistic, but there's a sense of dread & menace coming from many of these tracks that is hard to ignore (the creepy "White Hole" is a perfect example), as the guitarist uses echo effects and loops to complement his stark, pained lead lines. Some of the short tracks that feature news/vocal clips and odd noises kind of come off as filler, but for the most part Drone Maintenance is an intriguing listen, and comes across as much more than the 'drone' indicated in the title.
