Various Artists: One For The Road – Ronnie Lane Memorial Concert (DVD)

The world lost a musical icon when Ronnie Lane passed away in June, 1997. He had been battling multiple sclerosis since the late '70s. Lane played an integral part in rock history having been a member of two legendary British rock bands; the Small Faces and the Faces. He penned many classics with his former band mate Steve Marriott (RIP) like "Itchycoo Park", "All Or Nothing" and "Tin Soldier".

On April 8, 2004, at London's Royal Albert Hall it was time for fans, friends and fellow artists to pay tribute to someone who was obviously held in high regard, not just because of his contribution to music but also for the respect he had gained over the years.

The show opened with an introduction by host John Hellier as he read letters from Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton, who were not able to attend the show.

Performing over the course of the three hour long concert we have artists like Kenney Jones, Ronnie Wood, Pete Townshend, Midge Ure and Paul Weller. There are also lesser known bands like Deborah Bonham Band (her voice recalls a more refined Janis Joplin) and 17Black. Overall the performances are rocking and vibrant but there are also moments of poignancy like the emotional "Every Little Bit Hurts" and "Maybe I'm Amazed", both performed by the Deborah Bonham Band. Midge Ure also does a great job with the folky "Mad John" and "My Minds Eye" and Pete Townshend's rendition of "Stone" is a concert highlight, but really, there are no performances that go unnoticed.

Ronnie Lane was truly one of rock's unsung heroes. This production isn't about flashy photography and over the top stage shows, it's just about the man and his music. One For The Road is a fitting tribute to someone whose life was cut far too short. Released on Angel Air Records.
