Northern Crown: In the Hands of the Betrayer

There's no secret of the love for Candlemass on the debut EP from Florida's doom act Northern Crown, titled In the Hands of the Betrayer. This is epic, melodic doom that pushes all the right buttons, with powerful vocals (think Dio-meets-Lande-meets-Halford-meets-Lowe) soaring over a barrage of crushing riffage, the inclusion of some commanding Hammond organ ala Atomic Rooster, Deep Purple, and Uriah Heep adding a nice touch to an otherwise familiar formula. I hate to point out their cover of Candlemass' "Crystal Ball" first, but man, they do such a great job on this, those riffs pounding and the creepy organ adding a really evil element. Otherwise, strong doom cuts like "A Perfectly Realized Torment", the title track, and the lengthy, brooding "To Thee I Give an Orchid" really push all the right buttons for genre fans. Plenty of sizzling lead guitar solos to go along with the slow, punishing riffs, as Zachary Randall shows he is a player very capable of turning some heads, and vocalist Frank Serafine is another one to pay close attention to based on his performance here.

Northern Crown are without a doubt a band to keep a close eye. Any doom fan will certainly find lots to love here, and personally, I dig the keyboard work of Roberto Celentano, as he adds a lot of textures & atmosphere to these songs and really complements the overall vibe. Can't wait to hear what they come up with next!
