Unaussprechlichen Kulten: Baphomet Pan Shub-Niggurath

This band doesn't want to be reduced to the label "Lovecraftian," but their name doesn't give listeners much choice. The words unaussprechlichen kulten, which translate into English as "nameless cult," come to us more or less through Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard (creator of Conan the Barbarian) and August Derleth. Based on the expression alone, this band has a Lovecraftian bent. Sure, nameless cults need not always be Lovecraftian, but it's more fun to recognize his influence than it is to deny it.

The album art for this release, by the way, made it on one of Revolver's "Most Insane Album Cover Sent to Us This Week." Revolver's commentary focused mainly on the overt sexuality of the picture, particularly as it pertains to the Baphomet-like creature. The problem, though, is that the album title suggests a creature in which several monsters unite: Baphomet, Pan, and Shub-Niggurath (a Lovecraftian invention). Yes, the cover art is insane and disturbing, but it probably suggests more the character of this particular three-in-one blasphemy than it does a mere attempt to shock viewers.

Musically, this album is heavy death metal, the kind that never lets up and never shows any signs of weakness. I sometimes complain about overly-harsh vocals, especially when they show little to no variety over the course of an entire album. With this release, though, I thought the vocals were pretty much spot on, especially the way some of the words sometimes ran together quickly enough to give a sense of additional menace and mystery. The rest of the music is solid death metal, played just right. Check out "Ceremony of Belial" and "Kadath in the Cold Waste."
