Raptus is an EP and the second release of the progressive group Unbeing, following their 2011 self-titled debut. Four very tasty tracks from a five piece band that started in 2006, and along their journey they changed direction and ditched the vocals to concentrate solely on performing instrumentals letting their duel guitars, bass, keyboards and drums do the talking. So much more than another instrumental metal release which is hardly surprising given their vast list of influences "Metal, jazz, classical, folk, contemporary, electro, cinematic, trance, dance, ambiance, experimental, lounge and improvisation".
I do enjoy the intricate performances of such groups as Animals As Leaders and Blotted Science so I was keen to hear what Unbeing have recorded on Raptus. You can't release an album of this kind unless you posses the skills to pull it off as the members of Unbeing clearly do. Raptus "takes place in the Montreal Metro " so at times you can hear the sounds of people going about their day, the songs are a mix of heaviness, always tasteful and enjoyable. Clocking in at just under 20 minutes and while there are four tracks the EP actually seems like one long compelling track with different parts.
Raptus offers that chance to hear a recording that is fresh and very appealing, with no need for vocals.
