Curimus: Artificial Revolution

This album, the second from Finland's Curimus, is a powerful and highly energetic work of thrash and hardcore. Like most genre labels, these terms can be somewhat ambiguous. I find hardcore to be especially difficult to define anymore. Genres help us categorize, but it's really what we hear that matters.

What I hear on this album is a heavy dose of music that draws on the energy—if not always the speed—of thrash metal. Curimus is a very heavy band and they sound strong. I was sometimes disappointed that they didn't pick up the pace a little more. They aren't slow by any means and they certainly don't drag things out, but they sometimes favor the mid-tempo beat over that which will drive the punks to the pit. There are some fast tracks—don't get me wrong. It's just that sometimes things move closer to mid-tempo than they should. To hear these guys thrash in style, check out "Reincarnation."

Aside from thrash, this band is also a little bit hardcore. I say that mostly because of the vocal style. I'm not talking about traditional hardcore vocals, but something borrowed from the newer generations of hardcore vocalists. The vocalist here has a deep voice that he basically always uses to create a series of growls and yells. There are lyrics, but they cannot be understood without reading the lyrics. I thought the vocals sounded pretty good. They also gave the music a bit more of an edge.

On the whole, this is a good album for what it is. I was really impressed with the sound of the album. This is a very clean-sounding thrash album.
