Vampire: Vampire

I was expecting to hate this...I mean, really hate this. In this day and age, what metal band names themselves Vampire? Well, a bunch of guys from Sweden apparently have, and this is their self-titled debut for Century Media. Comprised of Black String (Guitars), Command (Bass), Hand of Doom (Vocals), and Ratwing (Drums), with Nuclear War (Guitar), and Centaur (Guitar) on call for live duty, you get a sense this probably doesn't take itself too seriously, but their music is actually something to take note of. Clearly influenced by old school black & death metal ( I hear bits of Hellhammer, Bathory, Venom, Emperor, and Morbid Angel at times) the band don't seem interested in reinventing the wheel, but churn out one corker after another here that just seem to work on all levels. "Orexis", "Ungodly Warlock", and "The Bestial Abyss" are all brutal & raw enough, while "Howl From the Coffin" and "At Midnight I'll Possess Your Corpse" offer up just enough horror themes to keep things interesting. "Jaws of the Unknown" rampages along like a modern day marriage of Venom & Celtic Frost, while "The Fen" clearly stands out from the pack with its gorgeous acoustic guitar intro before morphing into a maniacal black metal juggernaut.

Though it won't set the world on fire with originality, this debut from Vampire is certainly fun enough for lovers of old school styled extreme metal. I'll be keeping an eye on them in the future for sure.
