Classic styled black metal from Norway is always a treat to hear, and this latest release from Vinterbris, titled Solace, offers up plenty of those chilling, desolate, melancholic sounds from the frozen landscapes of Scandinavia. After one EP and a self-titled full length, this new CD on Nordavind Records sees Vinterbris firing on all cylinders, delivering a varied platter of black metal that has a little something for everyone yet maintains that vintage feel. "Dysphoria" mixes lush acoustic guitar passages with atmospheric soundscapes & raging metal, while "Ash Light" goes full speed ahead with ragged guitar riffs, relentless blast beats, chilling atmosphere, and hellish vocal screams...just a sensational old school black metal track. That raging quality continues on the energetic "Fathoms", another furious piece that houses a gorgeous acoustic/folk middle section that makes the song sound even more epic. The much more textured and progressive "The Aurora of Despair" and "Gazing at a Fallen Sky" will be of interest to any fan of Enslaved, Dimmu Borgir, and Borknagar, as these two songs contain all sorts of twists & turns, blending atmosphere with complex passages and crushing riffs. The band saves the best for last with "Euphoria", a deliciously evil number that mixes the prog with the ferocious attack of Norwegian black metal, 7-minutes of cascading guitar riffs, plenty of melody, acrobatic drumming, and raging vocal rasps.
Though there are always a multitude of new black metal releases coming out each and every month, make sure you don't miss out on this kick ass slab of Norwegian might.
