Vie; Donnie: Goodbye Enough Z'Nuff

Many bands are infamous for their internal wrangling and coming and goings; Power Popping, Beatles obsessed Enuff Z'Nuff being no exception. So what can we read into the title of this Donnie Vie solo effort, Goodbye Enough Z'Nuff? Quite a lot I'd guess, but then possibly nothing. Donnie is once again Z'Nuff-less, with the in, out and probably shaking it all about Johnny Monaco taking his place in his old (and possibly future) band as he has before.

For now though and with assistance, both on and, I believe, off stage from Magic Eight Ball mainman Baz Francis, Donnie serves up a raw, acoustic CD/DVD live effort which surfs through the career and song writing of an underappreciated mainstay of the Melodic Rock scene. And what song writing it is; the likes of "Fly High Michelle", "Goodbye "," Holly Wood Ya" or "These Daze" thriving in this starkest of settings of voice and acoustic guitar. Vocally, Vie has never been the most consistent performer and it is to his credit that the temptation to tart things up here has been resisted, his wavering tones often vulnerable and strained, as they take a shot at hitting the correct note in a, some you win, some you lose kind of way. However what this honesty reveals is a heartfelt performance of some power and much substance and while some will hanker for more perfection than Donnie ever has provided, his honesty and fragility shine through for all to see.

Not one single continuous recording, rather a documenting of a short UK tour, some songs fade in and out, others continue on from their predecessor, yet everything is surprisingly cohesive in an endearingly ramshackle sort of fashion. Disc one of this package is a straight set of songs on CD with little chat, while disc two, is a DVD that offers up a host of (split into over 40 chapters!) live recordings, music videos and introductions to both. All of which offer a little insight to the workings of the Vie mind; making a set that Donnie Vie and Enuff Z'Nuff followers won't want to miss.

Warts and all, and all the better for it, Goodbye Enough Z'Nuff is as honest and straight a live album as you're ever likely to find and while far from perfect, it is a refreshing experience in these days of super polished "Rock Stars".
