Mile Marker Zero: Young Rust EP

Connecticut's Mile Marker Zero are back with the follow-up to their self-titled debut from 2009, this time around an EP called Young Rust. Featuring textured, metallic, progressive-minded songs, Young Rust is a must hear for any fan of Tool, Fates Warning, and Dream Theater. Plenty of catchy melodies to go along with muscular riffs, intricate rhythms, and complex arrangements on the vibrant opener "The Great Unknown", a great way to kick start this EP. "Where I Want You" has more of a modern metal feel, with Dave Alley sounding more than a little like Maynard James Keenan, and the brooding, atmospheric "Bound", features haunting vocals over layers of piano, synths, and heavy riffs. I get a sense that the band has been listening to some of the newer acts such as TesseracT and Periphery after hearing "Trick of the Tongue", a pounding prog-metal track with some thick rhythms and blazing guitar & keyboard passages. "Toughest Love" once again shows Mile Marker Zero's penchant for crafting catchy hooks and housing them within memorable prog-metal song structures, and the closing, emotional "Between the Lines" soars to the heavens with some powerful vocals and symphonic arrangements.

This is a very talented band who hopefully won't be falling under the radar for much longer after prog-metal fans get to hear this fine new EP.
