Volume IV: Long in the Tooth

'70s styled hard rocking riffs and stoner grooves are the name of the game on the debut from Atlanta's Volume IV. No doubt their name is derived from the classic Black Sabbath album of the same name, Volume IV are led by singer/guitarist Joe Carpenter (Nihilist) and he is joined by bassist Blake Parris and drummer Troy King. Finding themselves on the very fine Ripple Music, the band have done a great job here paying homage to all those classic acts of the early hard rock & metal era. Images of Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Pentagram abound here, as well as more modern acts like Down, Mastodon, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Monster Magnet. Plenty of Carpenter's beefy, swamp drenched riffs & whiskey soaked vocals permeate Long in the Tooth, giving tunes such as "Wager", "Looking Low for a High", and "Blackwater" a heavy, Southern Rock-meets-doom vibe. "Save Your Servant" reminds of some of Black Label Society's more melancholy material, while "Kong" is just a brilliant slice of Sabbath/Crowbar styled doom/stoner riffing. We don't often hear instrumentals in this style of music, but "Awake The Dreamer" is a kick ass example of how it can be done, and done effectively, with some crushing rhythms and tasty guitar riffs & solos. Toss in the bruising title track and the lumbering closer "Locust Have No King", and you have the makings of a very solid debut from a band that has quickly scaled the stoner metal mountain.
