Scott, Yonrico: Quest Of The Big Drum

Michigan born drummer Yonrico Scott has been a main player in the world of jazz for many years now having opened or performed with the likes of Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Greg Allman, Taj Mahal, Joe Satriani, Gov't Mule, Santana, B.B. King and many others. He was also a member of The Derek Trucks Band and is currently involved with the Royal Southern Brotherhood.

Besides Scott (drums, vocals, percussion) the rest of the trio is Nick Rosen (Rhodes, organ, piano, clavinet, pads) and Joseph Patrick Moore (bass, keys, pads) who also produced the record.

Scott has produced a smooth sounding disc with very good production and a crisp and clear sound. The music is not overly adventurous but the playing is sound and the melodies are strong. A big drum sound and crisp Rhodes piano highlight the jazzy blues of "Witching Hour" although Scott's soulful voice does take some getting used to. "Can We All" has solid rhythms with a funky groove and excellent keyboard work.

One of the best songs has to be the groovy "Quest" with some of the best bass work on the CD. Moore's slapping technique rips throughout the tune while Rosen provides some dreamy keyboard textures.

One of the more interesting tracks is the slightly darker themed "Death Watch" with its percolating keys and riveting piano melody.

Quest Of The Big Drum is a solid jazz rock album with good melodies and first rate musicianship. If you are into a cleaner jazz rock sound that doesn't stray too far from the norm you might want to give this one a try. Released on Blue Canoe records.
