Visions Project: Visions Project

Wow! The real find of this new record is bassist Shirhan Agabeyli. The man has chops up the wazoo, and from the first song, "A Maze Leading to the Truth," he plays all over the place- in time, outside of time, contrapuntally, and all in support of some excellent fusion/prog rock. Not that the other musicians are that shabby, either. This is excellent stuff, clean, high energy and well written. "A Maze" is outstanding, and it features understated vocals from Zhanna Smolego. In terms of a referent, the closest I can come is to the music of guitarist Frank Gambale. It has his clean lines, phenomenal speed and huge technical virtuosity. The band is that good.

"Prelude" is a mash-up of classical and speed metal, solo, and quick. "Playing is All I Can Do" comes from the Jeff Beck "Now That We've Needed as Lovers" school of balladic guitar-based music. It's just gorgeous, slow but heartfelt. "Flame Inside of Me" would not be out of place on a great thrash metal record; it even has some growled vocals from Vlad Volovikov, and it also has the stop-start rhythms of speed metal. It then throws you a curve by shifting to a more jagged form, with doubled vocals holding the tune down. It also has a nice guitar freak out in it. "Just a Bundle of Nerves" is a bouncy fast-paced tune, working its way around some thorny bass lines. It is driven by keyboards (Hammond organ, maybe?). The Wisdom's Ocean" is a duet of piano and violin (or at least I think it is a violin, since one is not mentioned in the PR material). This is actually a good jazz piece. "I Like Soccer" (great name!) is a short piece, sort of a bluesy tune with a soaring guitar laying over the top. "Mazeppa's Fury" is listed as a piano solo but begins with gloomy synths but then becomes a dense orchestral composition. "One Burning Night" is a complete rave-up, with double-timed drums and astonishing speed. "Higher Than Above" ends the disc as a slow-burning song.

This is a real find. These guys (and gals) are good; they have chops to spare, have great song-writing abilities and superb technical skills. A great release.
