National Orchestra of the United Kingdom of Goats: Vaaya and the Sea

A band with an interesting name, with an interesting concept, making interesting music. This well describes the National Orchestra of the United Kingdom of Goats (NOUKOG). In truth, I had not heard of them. Their accompanying material to this excellent record of melodic prog rock tells that their music is based around the tale of "Kolepta," and that each new record continues to story of Kolepta. This disc, their third and like the others available as both a free download from Creative Commons and from the band website itself, is filled with music that is epic in nature, soaring and lyrically intelligent. I quite like it. I should also note that band members themselves take on various personalities related to their tale: The Coachman, The Admiral, The Seer and The Insane. Looking at the picture, and inferring whom is whom, let's just say I would not want to meet The Insane in a dark alley. Insane Clown Posse got nothing on these guys, nor does Gwar. But somehow, it all makes sense.

In listening to the disc, I took a few short notes on the songs. "Unyielding Summons" was heavy, brutal and driving; "Chains" starts slowly with the sound of a chiming guitar. "White City" was epic and soaring, while "A Memorial to the Descent," though brief, was dark and mysterious. The two "Black Citadel" songs are a suite, and are good examples of melodic prog/metal. "Vaaya and the Sea" is a heartfelt ballad with a beautiful guitar solo embedded within. And "evening Choir" brings the disc to a harmonically beautiful close.

As prog metal goes, this is great stuff. It sort of operates in its own universe, may not advance the genre, but is wonderful on its own merits.
