Nashville Pussy: Up The Dosage

"This is our Back in Black," suggests Blaine Cartwright, leader of Nashville Pussy. Clearly this is a massive statement of intent from Cartwright who is joined, as usual by his guitarist wife Ruyter Suys, long term drummer Jeremy Thompson and newish bass player Bonnie Buitrago on what I consider to be arguably their best album yet and I'm speaking as a long term fan. Whether it is their Back in Black is obviously up for debate and I'm extremely confident it won't sell in anything like the numbers of AC/DC's classic. That's not to say that it shouldn't because it's very good but highly uncommercial.

If there is a touchtone in my mind it's a gonzo, punky Skynyrd. What I mean by that is that this is relentlessly working class but never without a sense of wicked fun nor indeed a fabulous riff, chorus and solo. "Everybody's Fault But Mine" quickens the pulse and gets us underway with a sideways glance and we never look back from there. Special mention must go to the actually-remarkably-tender "Before the Drugs Wear Off" (sample lyric, "Well you're meaner than shit, hotter than hell, ten months pregnant, but you can't even tell, you got it on…") which give us a real down home Skynyrd sense. Also noteworthy is "Taking it Easy" clocking in at just forty-six seconds long with Suys on vocals which sounds as if the Beastie Boys are having an argument with the Donnas which is a recommendation! In fact I advise buying one of the many versions of the album listed below as soon as you possibly can.
