Various Artists: Concert for Ronnie Montrose (DVD)

Guitar legend Ronnie Montrose left us way too early in 2012 due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but with all his friends in the music industry you just knew that they would eventually give him a great sendoff to help the world remember all the fantastic material he was a part of throughout his career. In April of 2012, less than 2 months after his death, a host of musicians gathered in San Francisco's Regency Ballroom for a night of Ronnie's music in front of an adoring crowd, and a portion of those songs are captured here on Concert for Ronnie Montrose.

With great sound and expert video quality (as well as some precise camera work), this is a must have DVD for any Ronnie Montrose fan, as it contains some strong performances of much of his best work. The cast of musicians who turned up is lengthy (most either played with Ronnie at some point, toured alongside his band, or were produced by him), and they all took great care to deliver Montrose classics to the best of their abilities. Neal Schon, along with Steve Smith, Ricky Phillips, and Ed Roth, charge through a few of Ronnie's stellar instrumental cuts from the Open Fire album, with Schon especially firing off some molten guitar solos and Smith wowing the audience with a killer drum solo. Most of the band Tesla are here, with guitarist Frank Hannon ripping out some sizzling riffs & leads on the Montrose classic "I Don't Want It", and the Gamma boys reunite with Marc Bonilla in the guitar slot, playing a handful of strong cuts from Ronnie's early '80s prog/hard rock band that sees singer Davey Pattison still in fine vocal form. "Free Ride" is a lot of fun, though I'm not sure what happened at one point as KISS' Tommy Thayer stops playing but the guitar is still heard with no other player on the stage (wonder if that was edited in afterwards), and ex-Night Ranger gun slinger joins Hannon, Roth, and Tal Morris for a killer rendition of "Frankenstein". A lovely little acoustic set from CJ Hutchins is also included. The highlight for many though will no doubt be the Montrose band reunion with Sammy Hagar, Denny Carmassi, Bill Church, and Joe Satriani on guitar, as they rampage through "Rock the Nation" and "Space Station No. 5", but, where's the rest of the songs? If you read the actual review of the concert, the band also played "Bad Motorscooter", "Rock Candy", and others, but for some reason only these two songs were included. That's a major disappointment if you ask me, and I'm not sure why the decision was made to only include two tracks from their set, but it's enough of a missfire to stop this from being a sure bet 5 star review.

Overall, despite the lack of footage from the Montrose band set, this is a heart warming, red hot evening of Ronnie Montrose music captured on DVD for all his fans. Don't miss the additional performances that were filmed at Bon Weir's TRI Studios (featuring members of Y&T, Tesla, Mr. Big, and others) as well as some great testimonials & tributes from some of Ronnie's longtime friends & associates.
