Nemo: Le ver dans le fruit

Nemo are another recent discovery for me, although I am familiar with Wolfspring, an offshoot of the band. Nemo hail from France and their new album Le ver dans le fruit is their eighth studio release. They have been around since the year 2000 and released their debut in 2002. I have not heard any prior releases so I really did not know what to expect with this album.

In the band are Jean Pierre Louveton (guitar, vocals), Guillaume Fontaine (keyboards, backing vocals), Lionel B. Guichard (bass) and Jean Baptiste Itier (drums). Folks, I have to say this is some of the most exciting music I have heard this year. Although I am not completely enamored with Louveton's lead vocals (sung in French), they are just okay for me, his guitar work throughout the album is a real treat. Crunchy riffs, excellent solos, lovely acoustic sounds; it is all here for your ears to enjoy. The rest of the band are just as talented with a solid rhythm section and a fine keyboard player who gets lots of opportunity to show his stuff.

This is a two disc set so there is lots of music to dig into here starting with the first track "Stipant Luporum", a stunning a capella with lovely multi-part vocals. "Trojan" begins with chugging riffs and electronic keys. It's heavy, almost venturing into progressive metal, with cool riff progressions, change-ups and keyboard sections. When the background vocals join in the mix there is a decided Queen vibe, both in the vocals and in the Brian May like guitar. "Milgram, 1960" is another heavy prog number with dynamic synth and guitar solos while "Verset XV" takes a variety of twists and turns. Its mellow start of sparse chords and moody keys lead to one of the best guitar solos on the disc. Louveton's clean and clear notes burst through the atmospheric soundscape giving the song that extra bite. The music ventures into acoustic territory, building in layers of intensity before ending softly on an a plaintive acoustic note. The melodic "Un pied dans la tombe" features more excellent builds with smatterings of piano and another excellent solo from Louveton.

The second disc starts with the hard rocker "A la une", a nice blending of acoustic and heavier rhythms. In "Triste fable" the band opts for a moodier sound with keyboards used for atmosphere punctuated with crunchier riffs and another fine solo from Louveton. "Opium" features a bluesy acoustic intro, nice electric piano and an overall jazzier vibe. The main highlight is the seventeen minute epic "Arma Diania". It starts with soft clean guitar and cathedral sounding keys before the heavier riffs unfold. The song is interspersed with catchy Celtic flavoured passages and lighter moments of acoustic guitar. It is an excellent track and one of my personal favourites.

Matching the music, the fold out digipack is quite nice with lovely cover art courtesy of Stan-W. Decker.

Le ver dans le fruit is a fine album. It is both challenging and melodic and diverse enough to appeal to a wide range of prog fans. I look forward to hearing more from this band. Released on Progressive Promotion Records.
