OWL Trio: OWL Trio
OWL Trio is Lage Lund (guitar), Will Vinson (saxophone) and Orlando le Fleming (bass). What is clear upon first listen is the chemistry between these three young musicians. It is as if these guys have been playing together for years. This is a modern jazz recording with excellent musicianship as the artists explore well known jazz standards and throw a few of their own compositions into the mix.
This is a soft album and I dare say my initial impression was soft jazz but this is so much more once you do a little digging. Yes, this is mellow jazz and the melodies are quite sublime but there is so much nuance her, such deft instrumental prowess that one can sometimes forget you are listening to some pretty intricate stuff.
It all begins with the Duke Ellington classic "Morning Glory". As the title suggests this song is perfect to chill out to on a Sunday morning. The solos are tasteful and the mood is soothing and relaxing. "All Across The City", originally written by guitarist Jim Hall, is another gentle exercise in gently flowing notes that develop slowly over time. "I Should Care" is a lilting tune with a spry bass line and gorgeous sax. The guitar solo is very nice and clean. "Hallow" and "Churchgoing" are original pieces more abstract in nature. There is a striking angularity here more inherent to free form jazz. The rest of the tracks are equally as good.
The album was mixed and produced by veteran engineer/photographer Jimmy Katz.
OWL Trio is mellow refined jazz at its melodic best. From the songs to the performance this is jazz that needs to be heard.
