Vehement Serenade: The Things That Tear Us Apart

A Hardcore/Metal act comprising Karl Buechner (Earth Crises, Freya), Mike Couls (Skarhead/Cro-Mags/Agents Of Man), Jamin Hunt (Sworn Enemy/Hatework), Eddie Ortiz (Sub Zero/Cattle Press/Candiria) and Pauly Antignani (Sworn Enemy), Vehement Serenade could rightly claim to be a bit of a "Super-Group". Impressively their excellent debut album The Things That Tear You Apart lives up to the hype that tag guarantees.

With the names involved TTTTYA doesn't exactly surprise, but that's not to say that it isn't a varied and eclectic expulsion through a whole gamut of scintillating Metal and Hardcore themes. The title track keeps it simple, riffs chugging along, vocals cutting through raggedly, however when you take into account the full on romp of "Skeletal Remains" and its amazingly catchy chorus, where an almost The Almighty burst of Melodic Metal is what is in evidence, then you know there are a few welcome twists and turns in sight. "Between Season" slows things down to a fully convincing grind, with a keen eye for melody and restraint proving quite irresistible and then add to that an almost heavied up slab of Grunge in the guise of "Granite Shadow", the ear shredding shout of "Fight For Your Life" and the thunderous charge of "Fall Into Dark" and there really is something for everyone here. However "Get Up, Rise Up, Wake Up, Wise Up", with its rousing call to do exactly as its title demands hits home with such power and potency that on an album where there isn't a moments rest or let up - even when the intensity eases off - it is this song which takes the honours and lives longest in the memory.

The Things That Tear You Apart is a superbly strong statement from a band willing to keep it simple, but able to captivate, terrorise and convince as they do so. A Vehement Serenade indeed!
