Weber, Eberhard: Résumé

German bassist Eberhard Weber has been playing music for decades and has thirteen albums to his credit. He has played and recorded with the likes of Pat Metheny, Kate Bush, Gary Burton and many others.

His new release Résumé is a live album that offers something a bit different than the norm. Weber has taken various solo bass performances from 1990 to 2007 while touring with the Garbarek Group. While it is mostly his unique bass playing you hear he has overdubbed drums and percussion (Michael DiPasqua) and tenor and soprano sax, selje flute (Jan Garbarek) on selected tracks.

There is a wonderful flow to these performances and one can get forget you are actually listening to solo bass. Weber has such a unique style and tone and he often gets unique sounds out of his electric double bass that one wouldn't typically associate with the instrument. His playing is both atmospheric and ethereal, giving these tracks an ambient quality that is ideally suited for an ECM release.

The album's first track "Liezen" is a good representation of what you will hear. This is all about mood and atmosphere as Weber's bass flows gently across the soundscape like an artist's brush gently feathering the canvas. Likewise, the album's last song "Grenoble" is another mood laden piece with some pretty cool bow work making for some unique, unearthly sounds.

This is a mellow and gentle album ideally suited for fans of ambient jazz and those wanting to experiment with new luxurious sounds that only a bass player of Weber's caliber could produce. This will fit nicely beside your other ECM titles.
