Von Till, Steve: As the Crow Flies (reissue)

This is a reissue of Steve Von Till's debut solo album from 2000. According to his people," As The Crow Flies was originally released in May of 2000, when the world was a very different place. The historically and mythologically loaded concept of flight—be it that of birds, planes or drones—didn't carry quite the psychic weight that it does today. At least not in the public arena. But for Von Till, a purer set of correlations was already in place—flight as freedom, flight as exploration, flight as the most fitting artistic method of scaling heights."

Why then, do I not "get" this record then? Is it because of its dreamy, acoustic nature? Is it because I was expecting something totally different to the ethereal folk material on offer? I think it could well be that despite only having seven songs on it the album drags along at the proverbial snail's pace. As The Crow Flies is nothing if not deeply atmospheric and is probably unreviewable given the pace at which we have to turn these things round. That's because Von Till has much to say and the album definitely requires repeated listens to fully reveal itself. I imagine that when I get the time to actually choose to listen to this album that will be when, given the space to breath, it will fully hit home. Now, where's the next one I need to review?
