Necrowretch: Putrid Death Sorcery

These guys certainly deserve praise for their creative titles. They love to take the roots of words and connect them to other words. The result is a strange kind of wordplay or punning that makes the meanings of the titles hard to figure out. Take, for example, "The Anthropomancer," "Repugnizer," or "Necrollections." I'm sure these titles mean something in the context of the songs, but without being able to understand the lyrics directly, I can't say for sure. I enjoy the idea of playing with the connotations of words, but I don't know what things like necrollections could possibly be--something to do with what the undead might remember about things, perhaps? It's an interesting idea.

The music on this album is consistently strong and interesting. The guitars are especially bright and clear in their executions of the main riffs. I was also impressed with the drum passages, the way they went beyond mere time-keeping by using fills to give new life to the rhythm and the tempo. More broadly, the the album is mostly a theme and variation on the same musical ideas--lots of tremolo picking, growled vocals, and songs about rituals, goats, and magic. Unlike other black metal albums, though, this one is a bit more melodic and even has some rather smooth guitar solos, something I've missed on several recent black metal releases. On the whole, this isn't the best album I've heard lately, but it does stand up as a solid body of work. Check out "Soiled in a Crypt" and "Spewed from Hell" for good introductions to this band.
