Goldenbats: II

Goldenbats is an ambient project consisting of G. Duncanson and D. Meade. The duo plays guitar and eBow with some unusual devices thrown in like iPhone, YouTube, shortwave radio and bells. Presumably this is their second album but I found information on the duo to be limited at best.

The album contains four movements totaling around twenty-six minutes, relatively short for a CD these days. The first three movements refer to stages of the Cenozoic Era and covers a period of time starting sixty-five million years ago to present day. As I listened to the CD it was difficult to make a direct connection to the concept. The album plays as one long track with the bulk of it being quite dark and moody. Darkly hued droning effects and subtle washes of synths is the order of the day until the last movement offers a little more hope. The sound is lighter, more natural and the guitar is pleasant.

While I appreciate what Goldenbats have accomplished, I found myself waiting for something more to happen. That said, this is an ambient recording and your mileage will vary accordingly. It is not a horrible listen by any means and if you enjoy ambient music with a darker edge you may want to give this one a spin. Me, not so much.
