Vorpal Nomad: Hyperborea

"This is the best power metal CD you'll ever hear," boldly proclaim the members of Vorpal Nomad about Hyperborea, their first full-length CD. And some of the songs by this brash band from Colombia are, indeed, very good. The likes of "Skull Island" and "Final Cry for Freedom" rank up there with stuff from Blind Guardian, Helloween and Gamma Ray. These guys are hungry to reach power metal's elite level, and their fast but hook-filled songs, masterful shredding, gang vocals and fantasy-based lyrics don't get stuck in clichés. But a thread of violence also runs throughout this 42-minute album. In today's world, who really needs to hear a song with the chorus "We are the brotherhood of hate"?
