Black Metal-Beyond the Darkness (book)

If you really want to get down & dirty with all the gory history and controversy of black metal, then you should go out and read the excellent Lords of Chaos. Once you've done that, and want to then dive deeper into all the various black metal territories around the world, genre art, distribution, the various fanzines, plus some additional history, then be sure to pick up a copy of Black Metal-Beyond the Darkness from the folks at Black Dog Publishing. It's a well put together paperback book, chock full of vintage as well as more recent photos & artwork, commentary from many musicians, writers, artists, designers, and record store owners who are involved in the international black metal scene. Because of the number of different contributors to the text, some of book comes across as disjointed, but there are sections that are just a fascinating read, and the multitude of photos (most in black & white) really make this a worthwhile purchase for the collector and black metal enthusiast. There's a great chapter on the US black metal scene, and the lengthy discography of most of the bands who have any shred of importance to black metal as a whole is a very nice and exhaustive addition. THE book for those that cherish the 'underground' nature of much of the genre known as black metal? Absolutely. Despite a few shortcomings, this is an enjoyable read that contains a lot of important and little known facts surrounding the genre, and makes for a great companion piece to Lords of Chaos.
