Grave: Endless Procession of Souls

Here's the thing about Grave: they know how to make a great album. I know they've been around for a long time and that their fans probably have opinions about which album is their best and whether or not they've ever betrayed the sound that made them great in the first place. Since I haven't followed Grave, I'm going to put all those questions aside and simply say that this album made for a very satisfying listen. In fact, I've listened to it regularly since I got it and plan to keep it in my rotation for a while.

The best thing about this album is its relentless energy. Listening to it is like going to a concert where the headliner sounds great, plays all their best songs, and hangs out with the audience afterwards. As I listen to this record, I want to put other things aside and enjoy the sound. Most of the tracks move with speed, not thrash-level speed, but something like it. When things slow down, though, these guys know exactly how to play up the killer guitar riffs, always infused with doom. Yes, some of the song titles seem a little odd; seriously, what is a "Flesh Epistle?" In my view, the two best songs were "Disembodied Steps," and "Winds of Chains." I have no idea if the latter title is a play on the Scorpions' classic track "Winds of Change," but the musical similarities between the two tracks aren't close enough to draw any comparison.

Just give it a listen. Fans of classic death metal won't be disappointed.
