Il Silenzio del Mare: Il Primo Giorno

This Italian act is the project of composer Giovanni del Guidice who plays guitars and is doing the lead vocals. His band includes: Daniele Galanti (piano & back vocals), Riccardo Cardazzo on drums & back vocals, Alessandro Geri (upright bass) and Simone Morgantini playing sax and flute. Il Primo Giorno is the band' debut album.

This ten track release is made of rather quiet and relaxed music. This is a purely acoustic disc with the exception of some keyboard notes on "Estate". The lyrics are all in their native tongue besides a few words in English on one of their best compositions, "Nuovo Realismo". Their style is difficult to pinpoint, but it I would describe it has a mixture of jazz, Latin, rock, ambient and a bit of something else too. Certainly the main direction has an ambient / jazzy feel which gives the album its nice and laid back vibe. Some parts are quite reminiscent to what The Beatles were doing in the mid-sixties; especially in the choirs and Giovanni's voice is similar to Paul's in the high notes. "Canzone delle stele" illustrates this point quite well and has a happy/comical feel too. The next song, "Il Silenzo del mare" bears also that comical touch, but with a Circus style this time. A more upbeat Beatles-ish tune comes in at position # 5, the above mentioned "Nuovo Realismo". Then comes a bit of darkness right after with "Sogado", with upright bass solo and acoustic arpeggios. Most of the times you'll hear classical guitars, but the acoustic tonalities are gracing some of the compositions as well. The closing track, "Aria di crisi" was recorded with a bit of effect, making the song sound distant; again reminiscent to the sixties and The Beatles of course!

All in all, perhaps not an outstanding release, still a pretty enjoyable collection of quiet and relaxing music.
