Words Of Farewell: Immersion

Album number one from Germany's Words Of Farewell, Immersion is a well-produced and well-crafted debut. The guitars crunch and sing when they need to, the drumming is precise, the vocals earthy, and the dynamics of each song all come at just the right moment, sometimes surprisingly enough, most times predictably. But instead of bashing the listener about the head with an array of full-on intensity and amps-up-to-eleven riffs and savagery, Words of Farewell decorate their melodic death metal bruisings with subtle textures and dynamics that are as dramatic as they are powerful. The band plays to their strengths throughout. Vocalist Alexander Otto churns out wave on wave of death metal grunts; Erik Gaßmus's and Henrik Tschierschky's guitar work is as fluent and fluid as it is technically brutal; Nils Urginus bass fleshes out the low end when twinned with Jonas Wübbe's precision drumming; and Leo Wichmann's keys and ambient sounds give the band a rounded sound with his attention to detail and knowing what to bring to the tracks. As a debut, Immersion should get Words Of Farewell noticed but if they really want to stand out, they need to push what they are doing even further because, though largely generic, it promises much.
