Chopstick Suicide: Lost Fathers And Sons

You really have to give Turkey's Chopstick Suicide credit for trying. On their latest release Lost Fathers and Sons, the band does their best to deliver well played, brutal & intricate mathcore/metalcore in the grand tradition of Dillinger Escape Plan or even the more progressive Between the Buried and Me. The problem is, the band comes across as lacking any stitch of individuality whatsover. Tired and well worn out chiches are all over Lost Fathers and Sons, so much so that you'll have a hard time distinguishing Chopstick Suicide from any number of technical metalcore acts currently in rotation. Jagged, dissonant guitar riffs, maniacal screaming vocals, frenetic rhythms, and forgettable songs make up the majority of the album. Adding in the occasional 'emo' styled vocal passage here and there doesn't help much either, and despite some brutal passages and moments of technical expertise ("Television Television" and the cool jazz section in "As I Lay Fail") there's just not much to recommend on this very average and ordinary CD. You can hear that the band have talent, but the 'bigger picture' just doesn't seem to have come together yet for them.
