Witchtrap: Vengeance Is My Name

Album number three from Witchtrap, Vengeance is My Name, finds these Colombians hurtling through, to mightily good effect, some good old fashioned speed and thrash workouts. Unashamedly retro in their attack, the ten tracks (well nine and an acoustic "Intro") hurtle along at break-neck speed, caring not a jot for fads or trends. If someone was to tell you that VIMN was recorded twenty five years ago, you'd happily believe them. Now that could be seen as a bad thing, but sticking to a formula that thoroughly suits them actually makes Witchtrap into a band well worth listening to.

Subtle it isn't, but with the ultra dry production merely adding to the retro feel, authentic it is. While most current bands try desperately to seek "relevance" by adding growls, keyboards, or any numbers of the other latest studio trickery to their sound, it is actually quite refreshing to simply thrash your way through the forty or so minutes of Vengeance Is My Name. The ethos doesn't change much from song to song, with an ever present snare smash sitting high and fast in the mix, while the guitars riff and squeal from first to last. Add to that, aggressive spitting vocals and the blueprint that made the name of so many of the thrash/speed pioneers of yesteryear is complete. Don't get me wrong, the fact that Witchtrap are over a couple of decades late to the party and that they sound like countless other bands from the annals of metal history, ensures that they will never, even in their chosen genre, break above cult status. However raise your devil horns to the sky and bang your head along to "Damned To The Core", "Put To Death", or "Pay In Blood" and you'll feel like you are reliving the glory days of a time long gone.
